Donald Trump has broken the brains of the Democratic Party.
Just last year, state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky, a Livonia Democrat, was a powerful lawmaker in Lansing. She was speaker pro tempore in the Michigan House and even got to hold Joe Tate’s gavel a few times.
This year, Pohutsky is a back bencher with minority status in Lansing, and has Trump to thank for that.
She’s not handling it well. Pohutsky announced on Thursday that she has voluntarily sterilized herself, supposedly in fear of carrying a child in the era of Trump. She sterilized herself for the sake of politics.
“I refuse to let my body be treated as currency by an administration that only sees value in my ability to procreate,” Pohutsky told Michigan Advance.
Instead, Pohutsky turned her body and her choice into a headline for a party that can’t win for losing. She’s become the new avatar for a blue team that refuses to be normal, even for one second, even with their political lives flashing before their eyes.
Pohutsky’s publicity stunt wasn’t just foolish and it wasn’t just vain. It was taxpayer-funded. Every man, woman, and child in Michigan paid to tie Laurie Pohutsky’s tubes, for the sake of a headline.
Ordinarily, after losing, a person or a party might take stock of what happened and what needs to change.
Pohutsky’s gambit was supposed to be stunning and brave, a symbol of how far Democrats are willing to go to resist Trump. See, they’ll even go under the knife to resist Trump.
But it just reads as desperate. Nobody cared about Laurie Pohutsky, politician, before this, and nobody cares about her now. All she did is make the world a little uglier and make herself a symbol of that ugliness.
Laurie Pohutsky could always just not have sex. They even have a word for that: celibacy. But in the Democrat mind, celibacy reads too much like sacrifice. Besides, who’s going to write about a homely looking lawmaker not getting laid? Not exactly news. Certainly no way to bring Trump into it.
Congrats, Laurie. You got the attention you ordered. Your objection is logged and preserved for the record. We have heard you. We just don’t care.
So, go and shout your sterilization. Shout your abortion if you’ve had one. Shout it out loud.
Because all normal people hear is a sad woman crying out from the God-shaped hole in her soul.
What does it profit a woman to gain every headline but lose her soul? As Laurie Pohutsky will see in 2026, not much.
You should pray for Laurie Pohutsky. And then do everything in your power to keep her and her ilk far away from the gavels in Lansing.
