Why Did El-Sayed Hide With AOC in the U.P.?

While El-Sayed went leaf peeping Up North, Rogers got on like a house on fire with Detroit voters

The trajectory of Abdul El-Sayed’s Senate campaign last week sends mixed messages about his comfort level as the 2026 midterm elections enter the home stretch.

Spending over a week in Northern Michigan, including a day in the sparsely populated Upper Peninsula, the good “doctor” would appear content with where he stands in Metro Detroit with black and Jewish voters—two essential demographics El-Sayed has struggled to win.

Sensing potential blood in the water, Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers has aggressively campaigned in Detroit like no Republican has in decades—possibly ever—in an attempt to reach black voters, shocking pundits and activists across the political spectrum.

Smiling man in a navy blazer chats with Detroit patrons and staff across a mosaic-tiled bar, tequila bottle in front.

In an off-the-cuff remark about Rogers’ intensive campaigning in Detroit, prominent Detroit political activist Sam Riddle stated, “I’ve never seen a Republican do this in Detroit, ever.”

Republican strategists closely watching the race between Rogers and El-Sayed offered several theories as to why the latter decided to escape Metro Detroit so close to Election Day.

“He thinks he’s already won, and he’s getting out of sight for a few days to avoid adversarial media and tough questions about Hasan Piker and Iran,” said one consultant.

“He promised to campaign with AOC, but he doesn’t want to drag her around chasing working-class voters [in Metro Detroit] who find her repugnant,” said another Republican politico.

Democratic voters I spoke with in western Wayne County were quick to pounce on those theories, citing the idea that he’s fighting for every last Michigan resident, but given the minuscule number of low-propensity voters spread out over 300 square miles of rural Michigan, it’s hard to buy into that idea while Rogers continued to pound pavement in urban Democratic enclaves.

Adding fuel (and scrutiny) to the idea that El-Sayed is making unforced errors down the final base path is the last-minute transfer of $1 million into his campaign from AOC, pouring additional cold water on his promise not to accept money from big donors while running ads promoting the idea of keeping money out of politics.

Now back downstate, the good doctor appears stuck in a pickle as a now-fired field organizer was caught on hidden camera claiming El-Sayed has accepted campaign funding from foreign sources.

Meanwhile, on the same day, film of Mike Rogers working behind the counter of a popular Detroit bar playing grab-ass with black voters showed a more comfortable image of an outsider actually enjoying himself with people not traditionally tied to conservative politics.

What does all this mean for a Senate race with every eye in the nation watching?

In polling commissioned by the Enjoyer last month, Republican enthusiasm was in the gutter, and all trends appeared to favor Democrats across the state, including El-Sayed. But with absentee ballots showing tepid returns thus far, Democrats might be feeling anxiety about their own chances.

El-Sayed’s fumbling of easy geopolitical questions on Israel didn’t play well last week, and various Jewish Democrats for Rogers groups appear energized and actively hammering Metro Detroit with signs and social media ads.

The big guns are coming out. Both former President Obama and current President Donald Trump are coming to Metro Detroit for campaign stops on behalf of El-Sayed and Rogers, respectively.

But Trump is less popular than a virus, and the last time Obama stumped hard for anyone—Kamala in 2024—he ended up scolding black males and setting the former vice president’s campaign on fire with urban voters across the country.

Perhaps the secret weapon for Mike Rogers is his wife. Sparking a nuclear meltdown last Wednesday among prominent Democrats in Lansing, who degraded into Bluesky copium rage, Kristi Rogers handed out gas cards to Detroit voters.

The Enjoyer spoke with a retired Detroit male voter who met Ms. Rogers and stated, “sheeeit, that is a good-looking white lady.”
