This Bluegrass Legend Got His Start in Michigan

Muir — Bluegrass music is most often associated with the Appalachian Mountains. Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia are considered the home of the genre.

But what may surprise many people is that the nation’s best bluegrass player doesn’t come from anywhere out east, but right here in Michigan. I went to Muir to learn more about Billy Strings, the Michigan born and bred bluegrass player.

Billy Strings was born William Lee Apostol in Lansing on October 3, 1992. His father died of an overdose when he was young, and the family moved to Morehead, Kentucky, before moving back to Muir.

His mother remarried a man named Terry Barber. Barber was himself a bluegrass player who got Billy interested in the art. By the age of 8, Billy was accompanying his stepdad to gigs, playing the guitar while his stepdad sang.

I toured around Muir, trying to get a sense of Billy String’s backstory and childhood. Muir is a tiny town in the middle of Ionia County. Frankly, it’s not much to look at. It has the same vibe as some of the bigger Rust Belt cities, just on a much smaller scale.

It’s tiny, isolated, and in the middle of nowhere. The downtown is a single strip of brick buildings that have certainly seen better days. The only notable thing about Muir is that it produced such an incredible musician.

After years of playing in Muir, Strings felt trapped. There wasn’t a lot to do, and drugs lurked all around. His most popular song is the true story of a friend who got 20 years in jail for possession of methamphetamine.

Strings decided to get out of town for some new opportunities and headed to Traverse City. While working in Traverse, he started going to open mics and completely wowed his audiences. That’s where he got his start playing, and how he eventually found fame and fortune.

Since then, he’s been on a series of whirlwind tours and produced award winning albums. He won Grammys for Best Bluegrass Albums in 2021, 2025, and 2026. He’s played in venues across the country and collaborated with some of the most famous artists in the country.

He’s also been extremely important to the bluegrass movement, helping revitalize the genre and bring new fans to what was once considered a bygone art form. He’s widely considered one of the best bluegrass players of the 21st century.

Along the way, he found love. Billy Strings met his now wife—a yoga instructor by the name of Ally Dale—in Marquette at the Ore Dock Brewing Co. He married her at the Hoxeyville Music Festival in Wellston three years ago, and they recently had their first child.

Billy Strings has the most Michigan resume I’ve ever seen. He’s spent his life living in and around Michigan. He’s lived in every part of this great state and played his music to residents all around.
