Michigan State Spartans has had a whirlwind offseason, hiring a new coach and adding a $400 million boost to their NIL fund. Spartan fans now can look forward to a new gamebreaking joining the team, who grew up only an hour from Spartan Stadium.

Carson Gulker just finished a dominant career at Division II Ferris State University, playing for four years under Tony Anesse and winning three national championships as a true Swiss Army knife.

Before suiting up in Big Rapids, Gulker was a three-sport athlete for the Zeeland West Dux, competing in basketball and track and field in addition to football, where he ran the wing-T formation as a quarterback. Gulker ran for 11 touchdowns and threw for seven during his junior season, and rushed for over 500 rushing yards during a shortened senior season in 2020.

At Ferris, Gulker played different positions with the Bulldogs, shifting from quarterback to running back to receiver. The 240 lbs Gulker tallied over 1,000 passing yards, 2,000 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards during his career, and will have one year of eligibility at MSU.

Despite not having many offers coming out of Zeeland West, Gulker entered the transfer portal from Ferris and received offers from LSU, Duke, Texas Tech, Liberty, and others all within the first 12 hours. He ultimately chose the Spartans, giving offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan and the Spartans a player with a Taysom Hill skill set.

“Honestly it was the offensive scheme,” Gulker said in an interview with 247sports. “We watched a whole lot of film. I sat down with Coach Sheridan and Coach Woz and they gave me a specific plan on how they thought they’d utilize me.”

According to the interview, Gulker expects to mostly fill the tight end slot for the Spartans, with transfer QB Cam Fancher coming to Lansing from UCF and running back Cam Edwards transferring in from UConn.

Look out Aidan Hutchinson, you may not be Michigan’s best homegrown talent anymore.
