Michigan Democrats Pass Controversial New Sex-Ed Standards

The State Board moved forward on gender-identity lessons after parents pleaded for a return to academic basics

Last month, we told you the Michigan Department of Education was pushing a major overhaul of the state’s health education standards ,the first update since 2007.

They tried to slip it past parents, with public comment closing before most families even knew it was happening.

Well, this month, the Democrat-controlled State Board of Education voted 6–2 to pass those standards, despite overwhelming public opposition.

At the Nov. 13 board meeting, so many people showed up to speak against the changes that public comment was cut from three minutes to just one minute per person. You can watch the full meeting here.

Parents, educators, and pastors lined up to oppose the expanded instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation, calling it age-inappropriate and ideologically driven, while urging officials to focus on core academic principles that many Michigan students are failing.

One supporter of the changes, a father of a “trans child” and a self-described “perpetual scientist,” has since gone viral for saying: “I am sorry, parents do not know what is best. Scientists know best.”

But when it comes to science, it turns out the leading authority in Michigan education knows very little.

In yet another recent viral clip, Michigan Chief Deputy Superintendent Dr. Sue Carnell is asked a very basic question by Michigan House Rep. Jay DeBoyer: “How many genders are there?”

Dr. Carnell, one of the highest authorities in Michigan’s education system, finally responds: “Different people have different beliefs on that… “

In the end, the board approved the new health standards, with all Democratic members voting yes.

So now, Michigan parents, it’s up to us.

Michigan failed our students during the pandemic, and they are failing them again.

The good news is that Michigan is a free-to-homeschool state with pretty much zero regulations, and there are excellent private and faith-based education options.

Personally, I would choose almost anything over trusting my children to a system run by the people currently in charge.

But we also can’t give up on Michigan kids attending public schools.

Contact the State Board of Education members listed below. Stay in touch with your local school board to ensure they do not adopt these policies and opt your child out of all health education.

Our children deserve education, not indoctrination.
