The DSA's Insane Vision for Michigan's Future
At the national convention, they called for violent revolution, said Democrats weren't Marxist enough, and explained that exercise is fascist
You’d have to be pretty politically astute to have even heard of the Democratic Socialists of America before this Michigan midterm election, and even well-informed voters I’ve talked to in Wayne County seem oblivious when “DSA” gets mentioned.
Local pundits are careful not to discuss the DSA too much lest a spotlight be shined brightly on an embarrassingly radical and parasitic cohort within the Democrat party.
How big and powerful their movement has become is hard to discern, but they’ve accrued enough momentum to elevate several candidates into the midterm general election. Prominent Democrats I’ve spoken with have either dismissed the DSA as a small fringe movement or claimed the DSA has virtually no institutional power inside the party, but recent polling suggests otherwise. A CNN/SSRS poll issued this week reported that 34% of Democrats identify as DSA.
Michigan has three DSA-endorsed, -supported, or -aligned political candidates vying to represent us in Washington. Abdul El-Sayed, running for U.S. Senate, isn’t technically a member of the DSA but was endorsed by several members of that group including Bernie Sanders, AOC, and perhaps the most famous member of that organization, Michigan congresswoman Rashida Tlaib.
William Lawrence, running for the U.S. House of Representatives, has espoused his support for the DSA platform. Donavan McKinney, also running for U.S. House, was previously considered a normal progressive Democrat before taking a hard socialist turn. He is all but guaranteed victory after defeating Shri Thanedar in the August primary.
Locally, they operate quietly. Livonia, for example, does not have DSA chapter according to the official website, but Westland houses SOWW (Socialist Organizing Western Wayne), which, according to sources, operates under the banner of the DSA and is led by Rep. Tlaib.
Meanwhile, radical political candidates are deleting tweets and videos, usually from the Woke 1 era when, bolstered by Covid lockdowns and massive blue-state government overreach, progressives and liberals alike chased after every crazy notion.
El-Sayed has brilliantly taken this motif to a higher level with his goofy theater and dancing videos. He’s even calling himself “America First” as a means to confuse uninformed and malleable voters with populist vibes.
But the DSA is very real, and it’s a national movement with enough pull that El-Sayed, Lawrence, McKinney, and others are hesitant to publicly rebuke it. They are so powerful, in fact, that even their favorite Twitch streamer, Hasan Piker, holds so much sway that his presence in the national and local scene was enough to propel several candidates to victory, including in Michigan for El-Sayed.
It’s a real movement in the sense that it’s well organized (most leftists have the joiner instinct), but it appears the Zohran Mamdanis, El-Sayeds, and even the Rashida Tlaibs of America are chasing DSA clout rather than actually leading it. The real radical DSA vanguard has been harder to find—until last week.
The DSA held its socialism 2026 annual convention in Chicago, and although it was ignored by the media and establishment Democrats, the group’s surging presence on the national political scene resulted in several eyebrow-raising viral moments and a lens into what new political ideas and trends might find themselves cropping up in Michigan should El-Sayed and the others win seats in Congress.
Perhaps the most chilling and ominous discourse at the convention was celebrated American communist Angela Davis calling for the overthrow of the government and calling for violent revolution against capitalist institutions. Davis, with a career of communist revolution activity going back to the 1960s, was once charged with the kidnapping and murder of Judge Harold Haley in 1970. Will the DSA’s rise include further normalization of political violence?
To that end, UC Santa Barbara professor Dr. Butch Ware, speaking at the same conference, lamented that Abdul El-Sayed and Zorhan Mamdani were not Marxist enough and Democrats can’t be reasoned with. Therefore, must be destroyed. He received immediate applause.
Furthering the DSA’s class warfare, some random lawyer named Chris Newman gave an analytical speech pushing for a broader and more radical immigration as a means to expand the union labor force.
The most viral clip getting the most attention is the speech by Beatrice Adler-Bolton. So embarrassing was her speech on the notion that physical fitness is fascism and her plea that “the more dysgenic, the better” that even other prominent socialists lamented the unseriousness of her radical approach. Still not radical enough, she went on to invoke Hamas founder Ahmed Yassin as the perfect example of a disabled revolutionary.
Pulling the idea of health and fitness into yet another argument against Western values, Adler-Bolton dropped her best argument for avoiding the gym stating: “Fitness is a measure of relative disposability under the capitalism.”
The real meat of the convention, and what might be of particular interest to Michigan voters, is the DSA’s vision of the future. With El-Sayed’s campaign buddy Hasan Piker sitting by her side and nodding in approval, DSA leader Michaela Brangan, a professor and senior thesis adviser at Amherst College, articulated the revolutionary end game for their movement.
“I want to emphasize, socialism is a vision of a future without capitalism. It is not just government does things, right?”
Yet again, the irony was on full display and now becoming an interesting subplot of the affluent lamenting their own comfortable lanes of existence. Here we have a full-time college professor making $180,000 a year and a millionaire social media influencer calling for the end of capitalism.
