My God doesn’t sell meme coins. So imagine my shock the other day to see a man of God selling meme coins.
The closing prayer of Donald Trump’s inauguration was said by a Detroit pastor, Lorenzo Sewell.
In a room filled with our ruling class, Sewell took America to church. It was beautiful. It was special. In a building full of presidents and senators, God had the loudest voice in the room.
My Catholic brothers thought Sewell’s gestures and inflections were a little bit over the top, but to us non-denominational types, it just looked like church.
The spirit was in Sewell in that moment when he was speaking God’s word. Then, just a few hours later, Sewell decided to speak his own word, and that’s when things unraveled.
He acted on initiative rather than faith. He acted on his own accord. See, when I read the Bible, I read about Jesus flipping tables in the temple. Then I hop on Twitter and I see a pastor selling meme coins.
How did we get here? How did we get so far from God’s word so fast? Not surprisingly, the coin lost most of its value immediately.
This put Sewell in league with Hawk Tuah, who rose to fame joking about spitting during fellatio.
Honestly though, I’d rather that than someone spit on the word of God.
Pastor Sewell could have been a contender. Instead, he chose to sell crypto? And his credibility along with it? On his Twitter account, Sewell uses the #faithincrypto hashtag. I must have missed a similar one about Jesus.
The coin is even called $Lorenzo, as if to dispel any notion that this was about service or others or the building fund.
We will always have that inauguration prayer, no man could put it asunder.
But what happened after Sewell’s big moment is what happens when man steps off the righteous path and pursues vanity and avarice.
Lorenzo Sewell should have been an inspiration. Instead, he’s a cautionary tale and a discredit to the faith and the community he represents.
My God doesn’t sell meme coins, nor do my men of God.
